Every Indianapolis service business owner asks this question eventually, usually right after a slow month or a competitor's ad shows up above them in search. The honest answer is not "yes, always" or "no, do SEO instead." Paid ads and SEO solve different problems on different timelines, and running ads before your business is ready for them is the fastest way to spend real money for very little return.
Here is what the numbers actually say, and how to know which situation you are in.
What Paid Ads Actually Cost Right Now
According to WordStream's 2026 Google Ads Benchmarks report, the Home & Home Improvement category, the closest match for plumbers, HVAC, electricians, and contractors, averages an $8.33 cost per click with an 8.05 percent conversion rate. That is slightly below the 8.18 percent average across all industries, which tells you something important: home service ads do not convert better than average just because the need feels urgent to the customer.
Run the math on those two numbers and a click costs $8.33, but a lead costs roughly $103. That is before you have paid for the truck, the materials, or the technician's time on the actual job. If your average job profit is $150, paid ads can still work, but the margin for error is thin. If your average job profit is $2,000, that same $103 lead is close to a rounding error.
The quick math: Take your average profit per job and divide it by 103. If the result is under 5, ads need to convert well above average to pencil out. If it is over 15, you have real room to test.
What Ads Give You That SEO Does Not, Yet
Two things, and they are the whole case for running them. Speed: a Google Ads campaign can put you at the top of the page this week. Ranking organically for the same term usually takes three to six months, sometimes longer in competitive categories. Control: you choose exactly which search terms trigger your ad today. Organic rankings are earned gradually and Google decides which pages deserve them, not you.
If you need leads in the next two weeks, ads are the only channel that can realistically deliver that.
What Ads Do Not Give You
The moment your budget stops, the leads stop. Nothing carries over. A blog post or an optimized Google Business Profile keeps generating calls a year later with no additional spend. An ad campaign generates calls exactly as long as you keep paying for clicks, and not one day longer.
That does not make ads a bad channel. It makes them a rented one. Renting is the right call when you need results now. It is the wrong call as your only long-term plan.
When Paid Ads Actually Make Sense
- Your margin per job can absorb a $100+ cost per lead without the math falling apart.
- You need leads now, not in six months, because of a slow season, a new service line, or a new market you are entering.
- Your website is actually ready to convert someone who clicks: it loads fast, states clearly what you do, and has one obvious next step. Sending paid traffic to a slow or confusing site is the single fastest way to waste a budget.
When SEO Should Come First
- Your margins are thin and a $100+ cost per lead would eat most of the job's profit.
- You do not have a real landing page yet. Paid clicks landing on a generic homepage convert at a fraction of the rate of a page built around one offer.
- You are not in a hurry. If the business can wait three to six months for organic traffic to build, that traffic keeps paying you back indefinitely, with no per-click cost.
Why Most Local Service Ad Campaigns Underperform
It is rarely the platform's fault. The same three mistakes show up in almost every underperforming account we review: broad match keywords with no negative keyword list, so the ad shows for searches that were never going to convert. Generic copy that could belong to any competitor, so nothing about the ad earns the click. And clicks sent to a homepage instead of a page built around the exact thing the ad promised.
Targeting and bidding decide who sees your ad. The copy decides whether they click, and the landing page decides whether the click becomes a call. Most agencies spend twenty minutes on the words and weeks tuning the targeting. That ratio is backwards.
What Korva Digital Actually Does
We write Google Ads and Meta ad copy for local service businesses: headlines, hooks, and descriptions built around your specific advantage, not a template. We do not manage the campaigns themselves, your media buyer or agency handles targeting and bidding, but the copy is usually the variable doing the least work and costing you the most when it is wrong.
If you are trying to decide whether ads make sense for your business right now, book a free audit. We will look at your margins, your current site, and what you are trying to accomplish, and tell you honestly whether ads or SEO should come first.
